Century Farmers’ Markets, North Carolina & the USDA Food and Nutrition
Services Food Stamp Program:
The Leaflight is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation whose mission is
sustainable community development. Our
focus is community food security. Across the region we are enhancing the
local/regional food system through systematic and programmatic community food
security projects, and policy, that includes research, education, and planning. Community food security is “a condition
in which all community residents obtain a safe, culturally acceptable,
nutritionally adequate diet through a sustainable food system that maximizes
community self-reliance and social justice.”
Food-Faith-Farms is our system of community food security
projects. Our strategic goals are to
conduct and apply research for long-term sustainability.
Currently we are looking for volunteers to become involved on our research team. The major responsibilities of a Research Assistant include management and implementation on any day-to-day research activities, including the design of several survey instruments, oversight of distribution and collection of completed survey forms, creation of databases for data entry of completed surveys, and basic data analysis. Familiarity with database programs, such as Excel and Access, is highly desirable. Coursework in research methods and/or work experience involving data collection and/or analysis is also desirable. Experience working with volunteers and volunteer groups desired. Must be able to work successfully with a wide variety of people of many different socio-economic backgrounds, at varying professional levels, and have a sincere commitment to helping others. Excellent communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, and an interest in environmental and social justice are all critical to success in this position. Knowledge of community food systems and community food security also desired.
This is an excellent opportunity for graduate students, PhD
candidates, and post doctorate students to gain hands-on experience applying
research. At this time, all research
positions are voluntary. The ideal candidate would become involved and make a
one-year commitment. Three hours per
week with some flexibility in scheduling (perhaps additional hours in the
summer) from the start of work are required.
Those whose involvement becomes integral with their practicum may
schedule additional hours.
