The
Leaflight is a non-profit 501(c) 3
corporation whose mission is sustainable development.
Sustainable development is
both the capacity and a decision-making process considering long-term
economics, ecology, ethics, and social equity, within and among communities. The goal of sustainable development is to
build sustainable communities – communities with the long-term capacity to
remain healthy and prosperous over the long term. Sustainable communities usually have the following five
characteristics:
The Leaflight
believes that these principles are central to its organizing activities. Our practices
are research, education, planning, and policy. The aim of all our projects
has been to generate awareness about local agriculture, hunger and various food
distribution programs, as much as our aim has been to engage diverse voices in
participatory processes with our area’s food, inter-faith as well as farm
communities to achieve a community food security vision. They have been about providing nutritious
food to those who are in need, and about relating with our farmers who grow our
food. They have also been about studying the structured community-based food
system; to bring forth environmental responsibility, social justice, and
economic development; as well, to emblazon principles and practices for
sustainable development of a programmatic nature. Farmers, churches,
synagogues, mosques, temples, prayer groups, donor organizations and
philanthropists, social workers, local, regional, and state government,
businesses, homeless, and low-income citizens participate.
We currently have several
opportunities for professionals and students to volunteer with our blossoming
community food projects:
