The Affordable Local Food Working Group is focused on finding ways to get healthy food on the tables of people who may not typically be able to afford to shop at the farmers market or buy a CSA share. Some strategies that we're exploring include: community gardens, home gardens, gleaning, and working with communities of faith.
We recognize that food security means not only making sustainable local food available, but also affordable and accessible to members of the community who may be materially less privileged. As fuel prices rise, food from the conventional agricultural food system will also rise in price. This puts further pressure on families that are already pressed to make ends meet. Rising prices for conventional food may make sustainable local food look comparatively cheaper but in real terms it will never be cheaper than it is today.
